Social systems vary within and between species, ranging along a continuum solitary-living to complex societies. are emergent properties of interactions individuals, these often modulated by hormones. We investigated the behavioral hormonal consequences experimentally imposed social grouping in two sister species African striped mouse Rhabdomys, one which (R. pumilio) is group-living its natural xeric environment, while other dilectus) mesic environment. compared behavior triads age-matched, unfamiliar females each measured their serum corticosterone testosterone concentrations comparison solitarily housed controls. On day 1, both displayed mainly amicable behavior. Aggression was rare, but R. pumilio showed more aggression than dilectus females. Triads shared nests from 2 onwards, increased over time. Neither differed concentration solitary controls, had 1.3 × higher pumilio. Serum did not differ or treatments. nor at end experiment related duration shown triad members study. Endocrinology of sociality: comparisons between sociable and solitary individuals within the same population of African striped mice.

The social organization of species ranges from solitary-living to complex social groups. While the evolutionary reasons of group-living are well studied, the physiological mechanisms underlying alternative social systems are poorly understood. By studying group-living and solitary individuals of the same species, we can determine hormonal correlates of sociality without the problem of confoundi...

Assessing the costs of group living: Comparing metabolic physiology and growth in social and solitary spiders

Sociality in arachnids is extremely rare though well documented for the few cases that exist. However, no research to date has examined the metabolic and growth characteristics associated with social behavior. Delena cancerides is a social huntsman spider that closely overlaps in distribution with several closely related species of solitary huntsmen, providing a unique opportunity for compariso...

Social Decision-making in a Group Living Cichlid Fish Social Decision-making in a Group Living Cichlid Fish

Many animals fight to win resources, repel competitors or establish dominance in a social group. Mutualassessment of fighting ability, where competitors gather and compare information about their opponent’s as well as their own fighting ability has been the dominant theoretical framework for understanding decision-making during fights. However, self-assessment, where each individual has a cost ...
